 Subject:  Torch Run-June 5th 2000
 
 
On June 5th 2000, beginning at 12:00 p.m. the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will begin its kick off with a press conference on the west steps of the Capital.  In attendance will be various leaders in State Government, members of the Sacramento Police Department and various local law enforcement agencies.  The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is a global event.  All fifty states and more than thirty foreign countries participate and since 1981 have generated more than $80,000,000.00.  On June 5th 2000, more than 2,500 northern California law enforcement personnel from theFederal, State and local law enforcement agencies will participate.

Preceding the press conference at 10:00 a.m. on June 5th 2000, members of the Sacramento Police Department will escort runners from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office to the west steps of the Capital.  Following the press conference at approximately 12:15 p.m. the run will begin and proceed through the downtown area toward the Tower Bridge.  As the run progresses the torch will be passed to members of the Sacramento Police Department and members of various local agencies.  As the parade reaches the Tower Bridge, the torch will be passed to the West Sacramento Police Department and proceed to Raley Field.

The lighting of the Law Enforcement/Special Olympic torch is a special event.  It is the largest grass roots program event of it’s kind by raising funds and public awareness.
