Award of Traffic Safety Grant, Office of Traffic Safety

On September 14, 2000, the Sacramento Police Department was awarded two Traffic Safety Grants from the Office of Traffic Safety in the amount of $578,000.  The Traffic Safety Grants will allow the Sacramento Police Department to continue to substantially reduce traffic-related fatalities, vehicle collisions, and injuries and property damage through increased public education and enforcement.

This award will allow for the purchase of increased technology such as preliminary alcohol screening devices, radar units, and equipment for DUI checkpoints, lap top computers and computer software for citation/collision analysis.  This advanced computer technology will identify specific locations in the City that requires traffic enforcement and will allow the Sacramento Department to address City Council initiatives to impact traffic problems in our City.

In addition to promoting traffic safety, public education will include further development of the Bicycle Helmet Citation Diversion Program.  The purpose of this positive safety program is to increase bicycle helmet usage for bicyclists under the age of 18 years in compliance with 21212 California Vehicle Code.  Grant funding for this program will include costs of required materials.  Each participant in the program will receive a free bicycle helmet.

The Sacramento Police Department is committed to Traffic Safety in our City.
