On June 8, 2002, at approximately 12:28 a.m., the Sacramento Sheriffs Department attempted to stop a stolen vehicle (1995 Honda Accord-four door) in the area of Fruitridge Road and Martin Luther King Blvd. The vehicle took off and reached speeds up to approximately 90 -100 mph, traveling north on Martin Luther King Blvd. The suspect attempted to turn left onto Broadway at what investigators later determined to be approximately 60-70 mph. The suspect lost control of the vehicle and broadsided a tree on the grounds of American Legion High School (Martin Luther King Blvd./Broadway). The right front passenger Julian McElroy, 18 was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the driver and rear passenger who are juveniles were injured and transported to a local area hospital.
Detectives from the Traffic Division of the Sacramento Police Department responded and handled the criminal investigation.
Alcoholic beverages were recovered from the vehicle and toxicology tests are pending. The vehicle was initially reported stolen to the California Highway Patrol on June 6, 2002, at approximately 10:12 p.m., from the County of Sacramento.
The driver, a male juvenile, was arrested at his home by Sacramento Police Department personnel yesterday, June 11th, at approximately 1:00 p.m., after being released from the hospital. The juvenile was transported to the Sacramento County Juvenile Hall and booked on charges of:
1. Murder (death occurred while committing a felony).
2. Felony evading a peace officer causing injury or death.
3. Auto theft.
