PRESS CONFERENCE

The Sacramento Police Department will be holding a press conference Wednesday,  June 18, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Conference Room of the Police Administration Building (900 8th Street) regarding a new service now available to the public.

The Sacramento Police Department (SPD) will be introducing an innovative and interactive crime mapping program.  This crime mapping program will allow the citizens of the City of  Sacramento to see what types of crimes are occurring in their neighborhoods, including both violent and property crimes.  The crime mapping program is accessible through our web site at www.sacpd.org, by clicking on  the “crime maps” tab at the top of the page.  The information is updated weekly and can be printed in either a map or report form.

This program was the result of a joint effort between the City of Sacramento’s GIS Section and the Sacramento Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit.  SPD Crime Analysis personnel will demonstrate the software and be available for comment at the press conference.

Additionally, media is welcome to attend our InfoCOM meeting that will be held in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at 2:00 p.m. prior to the press conference.   The InfoCOM meeting is an interactive analysis of current crime patterns and series.  The purpose of the meeting is to attempt to identify short and long-term solutions to neighborhood problems.  During this InfoCOM presentation, there will also be a representative from the Mexican Consulate who will be discussing the new identification cards that will be issued to Mexican Nationals.

Media interested in covering either events is asked to call the Public Information Office at 264-5124 by
1:00 p.m., Wednesday afternoon.
