Officer Involved Shooting

At approx 8:47 p.m. this evening, June 28th 2002, Sacramento Police Officers were conducting a probation search of a subject at the Motel 6, 1415 Alhambra Blvd.  While officers were conducting the probation search, a citizen contacted plainclothes officers about two suspicious subjects in the vicinity of the Motel. A citizen had reported that one of the subjects had a firearm in his waistband.  After receiving this information, two officers went and attempted to contact the subjects.

When officers attempted contact of the subjects, on the northwest corner of Alhambra Blvd. and N Street, one of the subjects fled eastbound N Street.  A Sacramento Police Officer pursued and eventually caught up with the suspect at the rear of a residence in the 3100 block of N Street.

As the officer grabbed the suspect, he observed the suspect to have a handgun in his waistband.  The suspect violently struggled with the officer, kicking him, and broke free from  the officer’s grasps.  The suspect then reached for his waistband area where the firearm was located.  The officer saw this and, fearing the suspect was going to shoot him, shot the suspect one time striking him in the hand and the upper torso. The suspect continued to violently struggle with the officer and was eventually handcuffed with the assistance of additional officers.

Sacramento Police Officers obtained medical aid for the subject and he was transported to the U.C. Davis Medical Center.  The suspect’s condition is listed as stable.  The suspect refused to identify himself and was subsequently identified through fingerprints.  (Daniel Adams, MWA, 19 years of age, (12/22/82), 6'-1", 170 pounds.)  Suspect Adams is currently on searchable probation and was wanted for Robbery, Attempt Robbery and a commitment warrant to CYA. The firearm he was in possession of during this incident was loaded with six rounds and was reported stolen.

In accordance with Department procedures, the circumstances surrounding this incident will be investigated by the Department’s Homicide Assault Unit; Internal Affairs; the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office; and the City’s Office of Police Accountability.  As a matter of policy, the officer involved in this incident was placed on administrative leave.  The officer is a five year veteran of the Department and is a member of the Department’s S.W.A.T. team.   The officer sustained injuries to his knees and elbows and is receiving medical attention.

After being medically cleared, suspect Daniels will be incarcerated for attempt murder on a Police Officer, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a Police Officer, and possession of a stolen firearm.
