There are two events this weekend that may have an impact on traffic conditions in the Downtown area.
The United Farm Workers Union has been marching from Merced and is scheduled to arrive in Sacramento this weekend. The marchers will begin their march on Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 8:00 a.m. from the southern portion of the county into the City of Sacramento towards Ceasar Chavez Park (10th and J Streets). Approximately 200 marchers will be escorted by several Sacramento Police Department units to ensure they maneuver safely through intersections. Their estimated arrival time at the Park is 6:00 p.m.
On Sunday, August 25, beginning at 9:00
a.m., approximately 110 buses will be arriving at Ceasar Chavez Park dropping
off thousands of marchers who will march from the Park to the North steps
of the Capitol. The march is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. for
a 12:00 noon arrival at the Capitol. The streets surrounding the
Park will be closed to all traffic other than buses. The rally
at the Capitol is expected to last until 2:00 p.m. Upon completion
of the rally, participants will walk back to the buses parked on Front
Street via Capitol Mall. 5,000 to 10,000 marchers are expected to
participate in Sunday’s event.
