FREEWAY SHOOTING - UPDATE
The following is an update to yesterday’s shooting incident on Highway 50:
The 13 year old victim, his mother, and sister picked up a family friend at the Inns of America on Howe Avenue. The victim was riding in the rear of the vehicle with his mother. Shortly after leaving the motel they noticed that they were being followed by a white Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban type vehicle. The suspects followed the victim vehicle as it began traveling westbound on Highway 50. As the victims approached the 65th Street. exit, the suspect vehicle pulled along side the victim vehicle and someone from within the Tahoe fired several shots into the victim’s vehicle. One bullet entered the passenger area of the victim’s vehicle, striking the victim in the head.
As officers were beginning to arrive at the shooting location, a second call came into the Police Communications Center. A concerned citizen called to report suspicious activity near his home. Officers were dispatched to the 5300 block of J Street. The citizen had reported that 3 male Hispanic subjects were, he believed at the time, trying to break into a neighbor’s home. The citizen began following the suspects as they walked out of the area waiting for officers to arrive. A uniformed officer arrived and detained two of the suspects, the third suspect had split off prior to the officer’s arrival and is still outstanding.
These two incidents became linked when officers located an abandoned Chevy Tahoe backed into the driveway of the home on J Street. Witnesses told officers that the detained subjects had abandoned this vehicle. The investigation determined that this was the vehicle used by the suspects moments prior in the shooting on the freeway. A search warrant has been prepared and the vehicle will be searched for any evidence of the crime.
As of 2:00 p.m. today, the victim was listed in grave condition and continues on life support at the University of California Davis Medical Center.
The investigation has led to the arrest of the two subjects who were detained. They have both been charged with Attempted Murder and Conspiracy. A third suspect is outstanding and is being actively pursued by the Police Department. The suspects are as follows:
