Fatal Pedestrian Hit and Run

On December 21, 2002, at approximately 7:38 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received notification of a traffic collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian.  Officers arrived on scene and found the victim to be in very serious condition.  Personnel from the Sacramento Fire Department rendered aid and transported the victim to Mercy San Juan Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.

Preliminary investigation has determine that the victim, unknown identity, was walking east across Northgate, north of San Juan.  The victim was crossing mid block.  As the victim entered the north lanes of Northgate, he was struck by a black Ford F-150 pick up truck.  The impact caused the victim to be knocked into the south lanes of Northgate, where he was struck by a second vehicle.

The driver of the Ford Pick-up remained at the scene and was interviewed by investigators. No charges will be filed at this time.

The driver of the second vehicle fled the scence and has not been located.  The vehicle was described by witnesses as a white or beige, older American model.  No further information is known about the driver or the vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Murray at 277- 6032.

Update

The Sacramento Police Department Traffic Investigators have identified the driver of the second vehicle which was originally believed to be involved in the fatal collision that occurred on 12/21/02  on Northgate Blvd. Although still under investigation, preliminary evidence indicates that the driver of the vehicle was only a witness and that a second collision did not occur. The Police Department would like to thank the media for their assistance in this case, for it was due to the media coverage that the witness came forward and we were able to obtain this crucial information.
