SACRAMENTO POLICE DEPARTMENT SUPPORTS THE
SPECIAL OLYMPICS LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN

The Sacramento Police Department will be joining with seven other local law enforcement agencies to help kick off this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics.   There will be a press conference for the Torch Run Kickoff tomorrow morning, Friday, May 30, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. on the west steps of the Capitol.  Immediately following, the torch will begin its relay run from the west steps of the Capitol to Stockton, California for the opening of this year’s Summer Games which begin on Friday, June 6.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is a global event.  All 50 states and over 30 foreign countries participate and generate over $13,000,000 annually.  Since its inception in 1981, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised over $80,000,000 worldwide.  It is the largest grass roots fundraising campaign and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics, which happens to be the national charity for law enforcement.  The Sacramento Police Department is a proud participant in both this event as well as Tip-A-Cop fundraising events for this worthy organization throughout the year.
