On August 29, 2003, at approximately 5:08 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to assist the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department in a search for robbery suspect’s who just robbed the Wells Fargo Bank at 2301 Watt Ave.
Information was developed during the robbery investigation that identified the suspect’s vehicle. The Sacramento Police helicopter assisted in the search for the suspect’s vehicle. The helicopter located a vehicle matching the description and relayed this information to all the police units involved in the search which included FBI Agents. The suspect vehicle was spotted by the Sheriff’s helicopter in the Carmichael area.
Police and Sheriff’s units caught up to the vehicle with the two suspects inside and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspects refused to stop and a short pursuit ensued which ended when the suspect vehicle crashed on Plantation Drive. The driver of the suspect vehicle was captured immediately while the second suspect, a black male in his mid 20's fled on foot and began jumping over fences into the backyards of homes in the residential neighborhood. The Sacramento Police Officers pursuing the suspect observed that he was armed with a handgun and carrying a bag.
The black male suspect continued fleeing from officers and attempted to break into a home on Stonewall Drive. The homeowner after hearing the loud noises armed himself with a handgun and confronted the black male suspect. The suspect fired his handgun at the homeowner missing him. The homeowner returned fire at the suspect missing him as well. The officers who were closely pursuing the suspect and had observed that he was armed with a handgun heard the sounds of the shots being fired.
The black male suspect continued to flee and jump over fences in the neighborhood. The Sacramento Police Officers were searching in the backyard of a residence when the suspect jumped into the same backyard. The suspect now confronted the two officers and one of the officers fired two rounds at the suspect striking him and knocking him to the ground. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital for treatment. The suspects condition, according to the Sheriff’s Department, was unknown when he was transported by ambulance.
A large amount of currency was located in several yards that the suspect was seen jumping into by officers. A loaded handgun along with other pieces of evidence were located. The two suspects were not immediately identified and were not cooperating with the investigators.
A task force, made up of investigators
from the FBI, Sacramento Police, Sacramento Sheriff, and the Roseville
Police Department are looking into at least 13 other robberies that match
the suspects description and patterns. No photographs will be released
due to the ongoing investigation.
Sacramento Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives
and the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office will be investigating
the officer involved shooting portion of the investigation. In accordance
with the Sacramento Police Department’s Policy and Procedures, the circumstances
surrounding this incident will be investigated by the Internal Affairs,
Professional Standards Units; and the City of Sacramento’s Office of Police
Accountability.
The Police Officer involved in the shooting of the suspect has been with the department for 3 years. As a matter of policy, the officer involved in this incident will be placed on administrative leave.
The suspects both face a variety serious felony charges.
