On Friday, October 24, 2003, at approximately 1:03 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received a 911 call regarding a shooting victim at El Mango Way and El Limon Court. When officers arrived they located a male African American between #2 and #4 El Limon Court, who had been shot.
The victim, Renell Simmons, expired on October 31, 2003 at the UC Davis Medical Center as a result of his injuries.
Moshe Strong was identified as the individual who was physically fighting with the victim prior to the shooting and has since turned himself in and has been charged with murder.
Detectives identified the second suspect as Parrish Taylor, male African American, DOB 06/12/79, 5’11”, 200 lbs with black hair and brown eyes.
Today November 11, 2003 the Sacramento Police Department’s Career Criminal Apprehension Team responded to Oakland, California regarding an anonymous tip on the whereabouts of suspect Taylor. Working with members of Oakland Police Department’s fugitive warrant detail the group was able to track a potential girlfriend of the suspect to a motel room on MacArthur Blvd.
The team converged on the Mills Motel at 4550 MacArthur Blvd, Room #11 in Oakland at approximately 1:10 p.m. Officers made calls into the room requesting that the occupants exit and told the occupants the room was surrounded. A couple more calls were placed and two females exited the room with two children. Moments later, officers heard a single gunshot from the room. The Oakland Police Department deployed their SWAT team and tear gas was utilized. Upon entry, a male African American was found in the room with what appeared to be a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was recovered next to the subject. The subject was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:53 p.m.
Positive identification of the subject is pending confirmation with the Alameda County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin.
