On November 30, 2003, at 2:02 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department was notified of an assault that occurred at 102 K Street, in Old Sacramento.   Witnesses and security personnel for the local businesses reported that a man approached the victim and punched the victim in the face without provocation.  The punch caused the victim to fall backward and he struck his head on the asphalt.  The suspect immediately fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Suburban.

Police officers and Fire Department personnel arrived within two minutes and initiated medical aid to the victim.  The victim died shortly after the assault.  Witnesses were able to identify the suspect.

At 12:02 p.m.,Homicide detectives arrested John Anthony Almeda at his home in Colusa.  Almeda and the victim did not know each other.  According to witnesses, Almeda approached and assaulted the victim because of an earlier dispute between the victim and Almeda’s wife.

The victims name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
