The Sacramento Police Department is urging residents to keep windows closed when not at home, and properly secured during the non-waking hours. During the hot summer months, it is tempting to leave windows open. In the month of April, there have been numerous residential burglaries reported where the point of entry is through an open side or front window. The times of day range from early morning hours, to the early evening.OPEN WINDOW BURGLARIES Once inside, suspect(s) are taking items such as dvd players, jewelry, weapons, video games, computers, clothing and vehicle keys.
SAFETY TIP: Prevention is the first step in avoiding these crimes. Lock your windows when you leave the house. If windows are left open during non-waking hours, utilize locking mechanisms that limit how far the window can be opened. Dogs and alarms are helpful deterrents. Know your neighbors and watch out for each other. Call the police if suspicious activity or subjects are observed in your neighborhood.
Anyone with information regarding these crimes is asked to call Crime Alert at (800) AA-CRIME or (916) 443-HELP. Callers may remain anonymous and can earn a reward of up to $1,000.
