HOMICIDE

Today, September 27, 2004, at approximately 12:00 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received several calls regarding a suspect who was armed and assaulting others with a sledgehammer.  Sacramento Police Officers arrived and located four victims of this assault.  The victims were treated by Sacramento Fire personnel and transported to the U.C. Davis Medical Center where one of the victims, a 1-year-old female, was later declared deceased.

Based on the severity of the injuries to the victims, Sacramento Police Homicide Detectives were called to investigate.  A preliminary investigation revealed that there were several family members waiting in a mini-van outside of 3612 Pinell Street when the suspect went into the home and armed himself with a sledgehammer.  When the suspect was approached by his brother inside the residence, the suspect struck him with the sledgehammer.  Hearing the commotion inside the residence, the suspect’s brother-in-law, carrying a child, went inside to investigate.  The brother-in-law was also attacked, but the child was not injured.

The suspect then exited the house chasing his brother-in-law.  The suspect approached the mini-van that was parked out front and broke one of its windows.  The sister-in-law exited the van carrying the 1-year-old female victim.  The suspect chased his sister-in-law through several of the neighbors’ yards.  At 3628 Pinell Street, the suspect swung at his sister-in-law, striking the child who fell out of her arms.  The suspect then also struck his sister-in-law with the sledgehammer.

The suspect fled the area in a vehicle that belonged to one of his brothers-in-law.  A Grant School Police Officer, who was patrolling in the area, was flagged down and advised of the situation.  The officer observed the suspect vehicle and pursued the suspect who crashed into a tree at Santa Ana Avenue and Rio Linda Boulevard.  The suspect fled on foot, but was captured a short time later.

The suspect’s brother (19 years old) and sister-in-law (38 years old) are both currently in critical condition.

Neither the suspect’s name nor his photograph are being released at this time pending further investigation.  The suspect is a male Asian adult, 33 years old.  The suspect has been booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Homicide charges.
