SACRAMENTO SCHOOLS DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
On Monday, October 11, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., Hiram Johnson High School will conduct a “Table Top” exercise with the Sacramento Police Department, the Sacramento City Fire Department, and school officials regarding intruders on campus. The team will go through an exercise involving a terrorist threat, and develop a plan to resolve the situation using the Incident Command System (ICS).
The Sacramento Police Department has been educating school officials on disaster preparedness for many years. This year, the Department sent 22 school administrators from the Sacramento City Unified School District and the Natomas School District to the Federal Management Institute Training Center for School Disaster Planning. This training was a weeklong course in Emmitsburg, Maryland, which trained administrators on how to mitigate school disasters. The Sacramento Police Department also sent representatives from these two school districts to the Weapons of Mass Destruction Course in Alabama, which is run by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
The Sacramento Police Department has a School Resource Officer (SRO) unit in which officers work at the schools as security and with school administrators to address public safety on school campuses. Sacramento Police Department management and the Sacramento County Sheriffs Department continue to meet bi-monthly with school officials about school safety. There are many schools within Sacramento who have the SRO program in their schools. The Sacramento Police Department also shares its efforts with schools in the greater Sacramento and urban areas such as Rocklin, Roseville, Folsom and Placer County. The Department additionally coordinates response plans with the Sacramento Fire Department, HAZMAT, Emergency Medical Services, Public Works, Public Health, emergency communications, health care, and Government Administration.
The media is welcome to attend the “Table
Top” exercise. The points of contact are the principal of Hiram Johnson,
Lynn Tofya, at (916) 277-6300 ext. 1010, or Officer John Houston at (916)
