HOMICIDE

On Saturday, October 9, 2004, at approximately 11:59 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received a 911 call regarding shots being fired at 420 J Street – Downtown Plaza’s Parking Garage.   Officers were already on scene, and they saw a vehicle leaving the garage at a high rate of speed. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle the driver fled northbound on 5th Street. The driver finally pulled over at 5th Street and H Street, but not before tossing a handgun out of the vehicle window. Officers later recovered the handgun and placed both the driver and passenger in custody. The driver was identified as Fredric Maureece Baker, male African American, DOB 01-18-81; and the passenger was identified as Claudie Johnson, male African American, DOB 02-25-74.

As Officers searched the parking garage, they located a male African American near the
J Street exit that had sustained several gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene where they pronounced the victim deceased. The victim’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of the next of kin.

Sacramento Police Department homicide detectives were called to the scene to conduct an investigation. Homicide detectives learned that the victim and Baker had prior contacts that resulted in physical altercations. When both men meet inside the parking garage an argument developed that quickly lead to gunshots. The motivation for the shooting is unknown at this time. Baker was arrested for murder, and Johnson was arrested on an unrelated warrant.
