HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

The Sacramento Police Department wants to wish the public a happy and safe Halloween.  The police department is offering the following safety tips:

COSTUME SAFETY

If you are wearing a costume, make sure you’re child can see out of it.  Better yet, consider wearing make-up instead.

Have your children wear a costume they can walk in without tripping.

Wear lighter colors.  If your child is wearing a dark costume, adhere reflective tape to the arms or along the legs.

TRICK-OR-TREATING SAFETY

Go in groups led by a responsible adult.

Carry a flashlight and a cell phone.

Never enter a stranger’s home.

Stick to known neighborhoods.

Wait until your child gets home to sort through candy.

If your child’s costume has accessories such as knives, swords and other weapons, ensure that they are made of plastic or cardboard.

Ensure that your children have a good meal prior to trick-or-treating so they aren’t tempted to eat the treats they’ve received, before an adult checks them.

Discard any homemade treats unless you know the person.

STREET SMARTS

Stick to well-lit areas.

Watch for cars and other hazards.

Cross streets at the corners.

Plan out your route ahead of time.

If there are no sidewalks, always walk facing traffic.

Remember, a safe Halloween is a happy one!
