DUI Education and Enforcement Program

The Sacramento Police Department is announcing its Anti-Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Education and Enforcement Program.  Real DUI trials and up to 50 other safe-driving presentations will be shown in local high schools during 2005.  The Sacramento Police Department will also implement a “Hot Sheet” surveillance program designed to target repeat DUI offenders who continue to drive while on probation, as part of an all-encompassing anti-DUI education and enforcement program.

The program is funded by a $754,000 grant from the States’ Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, and also includes provisions for “Every 15 Minutes” programs on high school campuses.Conducting a DUI trial in a high school setting is an innovative strategy to help reduce community alcohol problems, including motor vehicle crashes.

Students will witness the legal consequences of drinking and driving, and learn about the defendant’s arrest, jailing, public trial, and if convicted, imposed fines and penalties.Other provisions of the grant include classroom education programs, ranging from illegal street racing, underage drinking, and real DUI trials in the classroom.

These programs will include instruction that contains video presentations, lectures, guest speakers and demonstrations, and additional DUI/Drivers license checkpoints throughout the city over the next two years.
