White Powder Incidents

This week in Sacramento, there have been several incidents in which commercial and government offices have received letters containing an unknown white powder.  The letters are addressed to several individuals in those offices.  Preliminary tests of the substances indicate that they are non-hazardous.  The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), in coordination with other federal, state and local partners continue to investigate leads and information as it becomes available.

The Sacramento Police Department recommends that; if you should receive such a parcel, do not panic.   Do not handle the mail.  If you are holding the suspected envelope or package, PLACE the envelope or package in a plastic bag or some other type of container to prevent leakage of contents.  Leave the room.  Keep others away.  Wash your hands with soap and water to prevent spreading any powder to your face.  Ensure that all persons who have touched the mail piece wash their hands with soap and water.  List all persons who have touched the letter and/or envelope.

Anyone with information regarding this case is requested to call Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP or 1-(800) AA-CRIME.  Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
