COMMUNITY RECRUITER PROGRAM

In order to be more reflective of the community in which we serve, Chief Albert Najera has made a firm commitment to improve diversity within the Sacramento Police Department. Understanding the importance of community involvement in the selection and hiring of future police officers, the Community Recruiter program was developed to achieve Chief Najera's goals of a more diverse police department.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY RECRUITER PROGRAM?
The Community Recruiter program consists of community leaders from neighborhoods, associations, clubs, churches, and businesses who assist the Police Department in seeking out and recruiting police candidates.

WHAT TRAINING IS REQUIRED?
The Police Department has developed a three-hour training program for Community Recruiters. The training will cover Federal and State laws, the testing and selection process and the Police Academy and Field Training programs. In addition, a DVD has been developed outlining the selection, testing and training process for police recruits. Each Community Recruiter is given a copy of the DVD, as well as, a recruiting book, which outlines and contains samples of the testing process.

DO COMMUNITY RECRUITERS WORK ALONE?
Each Community Recruiter is assigned a Police Recruiter, who will assist with meetings, presentations and the overall recruiting process.

WHAT OTHER FUNCTIONS CAN A COMMUNITY RECRUITER PERFORM?
In addition to recruiting, a Community Recruiter can also assist the police department by:
· Being a panel member during the oral testing process
· Participating in recruitment booths at community events

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A CANDIDATE IS SELECTED?
The Community Recruiter, responsible for selecting the candidate, follows the candidate through the Academy and Field Training programs by:
· Meeting with the recruit during the Academy and Field Training programs
· Participating in the Academy graduation ceremony
· Offering services as a mentor for the recruit

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A RECRUIT FINISHES TRAINING?
A unique aspect of this program is the ability, while the recruit is still on probationary status, to assign them to patrol in the community that recruited them. Therefore, the community can see their officer and the officer can meet with the community leader that recruited them.

The Community Recruiter Program offers a unique opportunity for community leaders to assist in developing and shaping the future of their police department by identifying candidates who possess the traits and qualifications needed to become community-oriented police officers.
