The Sacramento Police Department hires Entry Level Police Cadets,
Lateral Police Officers, Reserve
Police Officers, and Basic Academy Graduate.
Police Cadets are required to complete the P.O.S.T.
Basic Police Academy. P.O.S.T is administered through the Department's
Training Division and is paid for by the Department. Cadets receive
salary and benefits while attending the Academy.
Upon successful completion of academy training, newly sworn Police
Officers enter a Field Training Program where they are trained and
evaluated by an experienced FTO (Field Training Officer).
Sacramento Police Officers patrol designated areas, answer radio dispatches
or citizens' requests, conduct investigations, testify in court, provide
traffic control and investigate collisions, attend community meetings,
evaluate and control violent situations, provide first aid, and drive
vehicles under hazardous conditions. Officers may be assigned to any
shift. Upon completing two years of service, officers are eligible
to test for other Specialized Units.
Requirements and Test Dates
- High school diploma or GED and sixty semester or ninety quarter
units from an accredited college or university upon completion
of the Sacramento Police Academy.
- Must be 21 years of age upon completion of the Sacramento Police
Academy.
- Valid California Class C Driver's License required by appointment date.
- Those with
an invalid license or driving record with four or more negligent
operator points will not be considered for appointment. Applicants
must be free of felony convictions under California Government
Code Section 1029.
- Training sometimes requires the wearing of respiratory protective
equipment. Facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with
the safe fitting of this equipment.
- Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Must be a United States citizen within 3 years of the date of appointment to Police Cadet/Officer.
- Must
reside within 35 air miles from the freeway interchange of W-X
Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year of appointment.
- Those
appointed to Police Officer as a result of this examination must
pass an annual physical performance test.
"Upon successful completion of the background process, applicants will be placed into the next available Police Academy (July, November or March)."

Salary
Salary during Academy attendance for sponsored candidates is $3,336 per month. Sworn Police
Officers earn $4,200 - $5,856 per month. A 5% educational benefit
is awarded to employees who hold a Bachelor's degree and have completed
a probation term. An additional 9 ½% Field Training Officer
pay is awarded to appointed FTOs during training. (This amount is
included in top salary stated above.)

Examination Process
Written Examination: A Candidate must pass a P.O.S.T. Certified entry-level law enforcement written test. (A P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Exam Guide is available at the City of Sacramento Employment Office and at the Police Personnel Office.)
Police Cadet applicants must pass a physical agility test administered by the Police Department. The test includes operating a handgun with both the right and left hand, operating a shotgun from both shoulders, a 99-yard obstacle course, 165-lbs. dummy drag, chain link fence climb, solid fence climb, and 500-yard run.
Candidates who pass the written exam will be contacted to participate in an oral interview. Candidates who pass both the written exam and oral interview will be placed on a list used by the Police Department to fill vacancies. An applicant may only take the written exam once every 12 months.
Background and Medical/Psychological Exams: Prior to appointment, the applicant will undergo a background investigation that includes a polygraph test, fingerprinting, and drug usage history. Candidates must also successfully pass a medical exam, psychological exam, and pre-employment drug screening.
