Killed in the line of duty.
On April 15, 1858, 27-year-old George C. Chapman was appointed as a Special Police Officer for the Sacramento Police Department to deal directly with business-related crime on the levee.
On April 27, 1858, at approximately 2300 hours, Officer Chapman was hailed by a clothing store owner regarding his store being burglarized. As the store owner left to summon additional officers, Officer Chapman went to the store and confronted the suspect. The suspect shot Officer Chapman in the neck, fled, and was never captured. Officer Chapman died from his wounds at the scene.
