The Sacramento Police Department will be conducting an undercover crosswalk operation aimed at drivers who do not stop at the white lines for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
On Tuesday, December 22, 2009, the Traffic POP Team will be performing the operation which consists of a plain-clothes officer crossing the street, within crosswalks at different intersections of the city. Motorcycle officers and officers in squad cars will be observing the plain clothes officer, looking for vehicles failing to yield the right-of-way.
The goal of these operations is to educate the public and to reduce the number of accidents between vehicles and pedestrians. In 2008, there were 229 reported vehicle accidents involving pedestrians in the city of Sacramento, of which 204 had injuries and 7 resulted in fatalities.
