The Sacramento Police Department is seeking leads on a one month old homicide investigation that has gone cold.
On July 22, 2011, at 11:02 pm, officers responded to 15th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard on a car that crashed into a house. On arrival, 49-year-old Thong Khousakoune, was found inside his red Honda CRV and determined to be deceased. Preliminary indications led officers to believe that this was a fatal car accident. Once traffic investigators arrived they determined that the damage to the vehicle was inconsistent with the injuries to the victim. A more detailed check of the victim's injuries revealed that the victim had been shot.
Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Based on the investigation, detectives know the following: the victim had traveled to Sacramento from Fresno to visit some friends. The victim was last seen around 11 p.m. at the Shell Gas station located on 12th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard. Detectives believe the victim was getting gas prior to heading back to Fresno via Highway 99 southbound. It is believed that the victim was shot moments after leaving the gas station somewhere on 30th St near 12th and 14th Avenue. A motive for the murder has not been determined.
Detectives are releasing the last surveillance images of the victim and an image of a white SUV driving behind the victim on 12th Avenue just before he was shot. Detectives would like to identify the driver of the SUV, possibly a white Mitsubishi Montero, as he/ she was likely the last witness to see the victim before he was killed.
