Please Help Identify-Mail Thief

The Sacramento Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in several mail thefts near the 3100 block of Callecita Street in the Arcade area.

On September 24, 2015 at approximately 10:00 p.m., the suspect (pictured below in the attached video) was recorded on video surveillance removing mail from multiple mailboxes on Callecita Street.

On November 14, 2015 at approximately 7:29 p.m., the same suspect was recorded on video removing items from the same mailboxes in the area.  The video shows the suspect riding his bicycle up to the mailboxes, removing the contents, and then leaving the area on his bike.

The suspect is described as a male Black adult with a dark mustache, a receding hairline with short cut hair, and wearing a light-colored jacket.  On one occasion, the suspect was observed wearing a light-colored baseball cap with a dark-colored bill.  The bicycle ridden by the suspect has only a single reflector on the rear wheel.

Recently, there have been reports of an increase in mail thefts in the region. The Sacramento Police Department wants to pass along some crime prevention strategies to prevent and deter future mail thefts in the city.  Below are some helpful tips for residents to consider in order to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of mail theft.

·         Do not leave your mail in the mailbox overnight; collect it as soon as possible

·         Drop your outgoing mail off at the post office or in a secure post office mailbox

·         Do not send cash in the mail

·         Get a lockable mailbox (available at home improvement stores) or have mail delivered to a P.O. box

·         Advise the post office when you will be out of town and have them hold your mail until your return

·         Report all suspected mail theft to the regional postal inspector at (877) 876-2455

The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this crime to contact the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
