MILPITAS POLICE DEPARTMENT

The City of Milpitas was founded in 1852 and incorporated on January 26, 1954. At the time of incorporation, the City had a population of 500. Today, the City has a population of 64,600 residents. Milpitas is located between the cities of San Jose and Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is in the heart of Silicon Valley.

The Milpitas Police Department currently employs 95 sworn police officers and 31 non-sworn personnel. According to a recent census, the City of Milpitas is an ethnically diverse community. The Milpitas Police Department enjoys a partnership with its citizens, city departments and the local business community. In 1992, the Milpitas Police Department implemented the Priority Policing model of Community Oriented Policing, which emphasizes Problem Solving tactics. The entire police department works under the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing.

The Milpitas Police Department has taken much pride in its ability to maintain a positive relationship with its citizens and business community. The City of Milpitas and the Milpitas Police Department are especially proud of the relationship it has with the Milpitas Unified School District. The key to this relationship is our ability to maintain an open line of communication with the school district. This working relationship is Community Oriented Policing at its best.

The Milpitas Unified School District is the 12th most diverse community in the United States for its size with 50 different languages and 20 dialects. There are 14 schools, a child development program, and an adult education program. There are over 800 staff members to serve 9,521 students in grades K-12.

In 1972, the Milpitas Police Department, the Milpitas Unified School District, and the Santa Clara County Juvenile Probation Department joined forces to combat student truancy. That initial joint effort has evolved into a task force of one Police Sergeant, five Police Officers, two school district employees, and one Probation Officer. Today, this program addresses not only problems and issues of truancy, but also provides the youth of the City of Milpitas with various positive activities to help them grow into mature and responsible adults.

The following programs are a result of the positive relationship the Police Department has with the Milpitas Unified School District:

  • Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
  • School Resource Officers
  • Police Science Course
  • Crossing Guard support for the school district

The Milpitas Police Department and the Milpitas Unified School District are committed to the youth of this City to become productive citizens of the community.
