Officer Involved Shooting - 2000 block of 1st Avenue

This press release is a summary of the facts known at this time. This is an active investigation.  The information provided in this press release is preliminary and subject to change.  Additional details will be released as they become available.

On Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at 11:32 p.m., officers from the Sacramento Police Department (SPD) were dispatched to the area of Broadway/16th Street regarding a suspicious subject walking with a mask and a gun.  The caller stated that the male was wearing a mask on his face, wearing a black ‘hoodie’, grey pants, and carrying a black backpack.  (See attached photo captured by area surveillance)   The caller stated the male was walking down Broadway and had pointed the gun at numerous people.  (Click link below to access 911 audio file)

At 11:36 p.m., a CHP airplane arrived over the area and was searching for the suspect as well.  CHP advised the suspect was eastbound Broadway and was carrying something.

At 11:38 p.m., a patrol officer arrived on scene and the suspect fled south on 20th Street into a residential area.  CHP and patrol officers saw him climb over a fence into a residential property.

A patrol officer arriving on scene to assist saw the suspect with a gun in his hand. The suspect ignored the officer’s commands to show his hands and fled back into a residential property over a fence.

For the safety of everyone involved, and based on the suspect being armed, officers on scene immediately set up a perimeter to contain the suspect.  SWAT and K9 Teams responded to continue the search.

At 12:42 a.m., SWAT and K9 teams began arriving.  They developed a tactical plan and began their search at 1:36 a.m.

At 3:12 a.m., in the yard of an occupied residence, SWAT officers located the suspect hiding under a stairwell at the rear of the house.  Officers observed the suspect with a gun in his hand and ordered him to drop his weapon.  The suspect pointed his weapon at officers, who then fired at the suspect.  The officers rendered medical aid, including CPR until the Sacramento Fire Department arrived and took over medical care. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by fire personnel.

When officers approached the suspect, they recovered a firearm and a knife.  Investigators determined the firearm was a pellet gun that was a replica of a Sig Sauer P225 9MM handgun. See photograph attached of suspect’s firearm and knife.  Additionally, see attached photograph of an actual Sig Sauer P225 9MM handgun.

The identity of the suspect will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once the next of kin has been notified.

Homicide Detectives, Internal Affairs, and Crime Scene Investigation Units responded to the scene to begin an officer-involved shooting investigation.  As part of the department’s protocol, this incident is being investigated in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Sacramento City Attorney’s Office and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability.

The two Sacramento Police Officers involved in this incident have eleven and seventeen years with the Department.  None of the officers involved were injured in this incident and both were placed on administrative leave per standard protocol.

This incident falls under the City Council policy on Police Use of Force.  As a result, the video and audio associated with this incident will be released to the public within 30 days.
